Tutorial 6

Hello people, it has been 2 weeks since i last blogged. Well, the reason for not blogging the past few weeks are mainly due to projects, homework and projects.

Today I am going to talk about tutorial 6 which is about invisible web.

Invisible web, also known as deep web or dark matter are a collection of information stored in the form of data. There is a technical limitation such that general purpose search engines cannot and will not add to their indices of web pages.

The first search database used is Ebsohost.

Unlike other search engines, the search results have a gauge to show the relevancy of the results. This will aid people in finding more useful information they need.

However, there is a disadvantage as the snippets are too short and they did not provide enough information or rather did not really provide the gist of the containing information. Users will have a hard time to decide whether the particular search result is useful or not. Decision cannot be made purely based on the relevance gauge bar.

Relevant information that I found is under the link:

I choose Factiva as my 2nd database.

Search results are not arranged in order, and duplicate results will be shown unless stated that duplicate results are omitted. The search results are totally different from what I found in the EbscoHost. This is due to the fact that I can no longer type the same thing as what I had keyed in into the search box of Factiva. There is a certain restriction in the number of words that I typed in. The longer the words, the lesser chance that the research database will generate information base on the search query.

As compared to search engines, meta-search or subject directory, I cannot really decide which is more effective. The effectiveness of each facility mainly depend on the users. If they are searching a familiar topic, search engine and meta-search will serve as more effective. For unfamiliar topic, subject directory should be used to browse for relevant links. However, if the user wants specialised information, then invisible web will be a better choice over the other search facilities.

I may use invisible web in my Diploma in Accounting and Finance as I will want to get more specialised information. however, a combination of search facilities should be used to cover a large proportion of relevant web pages.

Well, thats all for tutorial 6. Do stay closed to my updates as I will soon blog about Tutorial 7 in a few days time. = )
